Reaction to Bayern v Stuttgart

Bayern are up to second in the Bundesliga table and are picking up steam in the new season after beating VfB Stuttgart 2-0. “We’re always pleased when we win,” coach Pep Guardiola said afterwards. “It was workmanlike. We still need a little time. We’re improving, but the three points are what mattered,” added Xabi Alonso.

Pep Guardiola: ”We dominated the match and had lots of touches of the ball but we had problems with the final pass and our crosses. We’re always pleased when we win.”

Xabi Alonso:
”It was tough going. We obviously dominated the game, but there were a few minutes before the first goal when we weren’t so good. We put a lot into it in the second half. We knew Stuttgart only needed the one goal for most of the match, but we were a lot more composed after our second goal. It was a workmanlike win. We still need a little time. We’re improving, but the three points are what mattered.”

Franck Ribéry: ”Being back in the team was important to me personally. I’m delighted I had some playing time today and scored on my comeback. The three points are important for the team.”

Armin Veh (VfB Stuttgart coach): ”We kept it very tight and prevented them creating much from open play. Our movement was good and we tried to close them down early, which went well. We looked for chances on the break in the second half but that didn’t go well at all. You never get many chances against Bayern. We lacked conviction in the final third, and we have to work on that. The second goal killed the game and overall Bayern deserved to win.”

Martin Harnik (VfB Stuttgart):
”We didn’t put together any decent attacking moves. We defended bravely and covered a lot of ground but we saw very little of the ball, as usual for us in Munich. Bayern just coolly saw it through and took the chances they created. On the occasions we did have the ball, we gave it away too quickly.”

Moritz Leitner (VfB Stuttgart): ”Scoring in Munich is tough. We tried to play courageously and get forward, sometimes to good effect and sometimes not. We have to focus on our next match now and go for it.”
