Pep Guardiola: “It was hard work in the first half because Hamburg played with six at the back. We switched things around a bit at half-time and we improved after that. We had a few problems keeping the pace of the game high. I’m pleased with the debuts for Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal. They have quality and experience and will bring a lot to Bayern Munich. It was the first match and I’m satisfied with the performance.”
Thomas Müller: “That was a super team performance. Once again, we’ve proved we’re still hungry despite all our success in recent years, and we don’t ease off even when we’re 3-0 up. We want to maintain this mentality.”
Robert Lewandowski: “It was the first match and we’ve won it, which is what matters. The first half wasn’t so good, but after going 2-0 up it was clear we could score more goals. It wasn’t easy and we had to be patient.”
Bruno Labbadia (Hamburg coach): “We played well tactically in the first half but then conceded a silly opening goal. We should have defended much better. We let in the second very early after half-time. We aim to learn from last season, keep on working hard and not allow ourselves to be knocked off course."
Dennis Diekmeier (Hamburg): “We have to look for positives. We were disciplined in the first half and stopped them creating much, but we fell apart after the goal early in the second half. We’re disappointed about losing like that."
